HYMNTUNES VIII

Hymntunes VIII on Elizabethan Christmas Songs for three flutes & piano, with optional crotales (2010).

In 2009 I visited Northern England just after the Christmas holiday. The atmosphere in the North- umberland towns was markedly different than in the United States. Here, Christmas was an serious, ancient holiday. There was something wonderful about the mood in Britain at that time of year and when I returned home I vowed that I would write a piece that embodied it. Hymntunes VIII is based mostly on music from Elizabethan Britain. It's primary inspiration is a piece by John Bull—In Nomine. To this music, I added material from William Byrd (The Bells) and references to a number of renaissance Christmas hymns: Lo, How a Rose, Good Christian Men Rejoice, and the Coventry Carol.

Hymntunes VIII appears on the Woodwind Music of Robert Fruehwald, Vol. 2.
