The Fool for clarinet ensemble (2021).

The folia is the quintessential baroque musical formula. It is an easy formula to remember and it is a convenient vehicle for improvisation. The word “folia” is associated with revelry in Portuguese. In Italian, the word “follia” is associated with folly, foolishness, madness. I chose “The Fool” to be the work’s title to reflect the quirky character of the piece and as a comment on my own compositional process. The simplicity of the folia pattern fooled me into thinking that composing a piece based on it would be easy.
